A brand new year and a brand new football team! With just a couple of sessions together before the competition,  I took the boys to Market Road for the Islington District preliminaries.

For most of the boys it was their first taste of a competition but with Ethan as their captain they were in very experienced hands.

We were in a group of 4 consisting of Duncombe, Prior Weston and our close friends St John’s Highbury Vale.

Our first game was against Duncombe and we had the majority of play. The first half nerves soon subsided and the boys dominated the second half with countless corners and shots on target but their goalie was strong and no matter how hard the boys tried they couldn’t get it in the net. The result was a 0-0.

The next game was against Prior Weston and again the boys dominated play. Sean scored a cracking goal and we won 1-0.

Our last group game was against St Johns Highbury Vale (who had won their first 2 games.) Having watched their previous games we knew who to mark and the boys were brilliant. Leo made 2 spectacular saves and we had a few shots on target but again we lacked that striking force up front. Final score 0-0.

We finished second in the group but it wasn’t enough to take us through to the finals. I was really impressed with the boys and for their first time playing together they should be really proud.

Well done.
