The Cross country event is one of the toughest events in the sporting calendar. It’s muddy, it’s a long way and there are a LOT of children!

For our year 4’s it was their first time competing in the event and they were outstanding. Six of our girls all finished in the top 22 which was amazing. Alana finished in 3rd place to get a bronze medal which was some achievement out of 110 children. Zac also roared home in 3rd place to get a bronze – 2 medals in the first two races got us off to a tremendous start.

The year 5’s were up next and they had to run 1500metres across the very tricky terrain. Once again both the girls and the boys were on fire and 4 of the boys finished in the top 15. Ethan, once again, showed his strength in the field and came 2nd to get a silver medal.

And finally it was the turn of year 6, who would be running this for the last time as Gillespie. I think all the girls improved on their positions from last year which was great to see. In the boys race we had 4 finish in the top 30 and one of those boys was Sammy D who claimed gold and won it by a (cross) country mile! Sammy has won this event every year since year 4.

My hope is that a lot of children have been inspired by this event  (and in particular the achievements of Sammy) and now want to take up running. I for one hope to see the name Sammy Djilli dominating the Olympics in the track events in the not too distant future.

Well done to all who took part. It was a pleasure to see you all running your hearts out. Angela
