20 Jul Cricketing Glory
For the third year running, Gillespie took part in Capital Kids Cricket inclusion league finals at Lords on Friday 14th July.
The team consisted of Daniel (captain,) James, Rhydian, David R, Dogukan and Yonis. Most of them had played in last year’s final but Rhydian was new to the side.
There were 8 teams in total on the day and we were split into 2 leagues. Our first match was against New End (green team) and although the team hadn’t played since the start of the year, they played very well and won by 2 runs (a very close call!). Our second match was against New End (red team) and it was clear Gillespie had remembered how to play and they won by 40 runs which was amazing!
With 2 wins on the score sheet Gillespie were through to the finals where they met the team they lost to in last year’s final, Salisbury. Salisbury batted first and recorded 119 runs on the score board which was a huge total to be chasing. However, the team were phenomenal and the tail-end batters made some fantastic runs and managed to get 154 in total, which meant that after 3 years of trying, Gillespie were the champions!
It really was an amazing day and all the team played with great spirit. I would like to thank Denise at Capital Kids for making the call to make sure we were going to be at the finals. The new mayor of Islington also came along to support us – take a look at the photos!
Let’s hope we can defend the title next year!
