24 Mar Dab’ll do!
On Friday 17th March 2017 the Gillespie cricket team met at school just before 8am for the finals at Lords. They looked amazing in their whites and although the nerves were high, all of them were excited about the day ahead.
In total 150 schools had entered this competition and we were down to the last 8, which was a phenomenal achievement.
We were split into 2 groups of 4. In our group were Little Ealing (who we played last year), Furzedown and William Patten – all very good cricketing schools. Our first match was against Little Ealing and they batted first. The team played brilliantly in the field but their batting was strong and defensive, which allowed them to steal runs. We were chasing 120 which was just too much for us.
The second and third games against Furzedown and William Patten were more closely matched but on the day we just couldn’t get the runs needed.
Although the cricket didn’t go our way on the day, the team were fantastic. It was brilliant to be joined by the Mayor of Islington and also for the team to play against a very high standard of cricket teams. We had a photo on the pitch at Lords with our Mayor and we even got her to dab!
I would like to say a huge thanks to Andy Grinham for all he does to help develop cricket at Gillespie.
And finally a massive well done to the team for working so hard to get to the finals. Well done; Zac (captain) Lukas, Freddie, Rufus, Daniel, Lara, Naomi, Maddy, Aedan and finally to Ethan for helping us get to the finals but who sadly was too ill to come on the day.
