28 Feb Arsenal Premier League Competition

The week after the Spring half term is always the date for Arsenal Premier League Schools competition, which is the event that all schools want to win and being the current holders of the trophy the nerves were high.

We arrived at Market Road full of nerves, excitement and anticipation. Ethan was captain and knew from last year that a tough day of football lay ahead. A total of 32 schools from Islington, Hackney and Camden arrived and were split into groups of 4.  In our group we had Brecknock Primary School from Camden, Rhyl Primary School from Camden and Harrington Hill from Hackney.

Our first game was against Rhyl Primary School and we got off to a flying start with Ethan scoring in the first minute. The shooting spree continued throughout the game and final score was 6-0. We certainly excelled in that game and made the others in the group nervous. We dominated the group stage and beat Brecknock Primary School 4-2 and Harrington Hill 4-0. Leo was a rock in goal and made some outstanding saves whilst Ethan and Sean scored some fantastic goals in these matches.

And so to the knock out stage of the competition – the last 16. Our opponents were Newington Green who got off to a good start. They scored an early goal but that just made Gillespie more determined. The team found a hole in their defence and we won 3-1.

The quarter finals were next where once again we faced Brecknock Prmiary School who we had played earlier in the day. We knew where we had made mistakes in the group stage and knew who to target and with that in mind we kept possession of the ball and won 4-0 with Ria scoring a sublime goal from close range.

We were now into the semi-finals and in the last 4 of the competition. The draw was made and we were to face Ashmount, a team we haven’t been able to beat in any of our meetings. I knew what a dominant force they were and knew they would make Ethan their target. Ashmount got off to a great start with an early goal and we just couldn’t keep the ball no matter how hard we tried. It was a great effort from Gillespie but Ashmount were too strong and won 4-0. We could take a lot of comfort knowing that they went on to win the competition.

We had 3rd place play off to find out our standings on the day which we drew 2-2 and so we shared 3rd place.

It was a fantastic display of football from Gillespie and the team did the school proud. Well done.

Team: Leo, James, Freddie, Kiri, Lara, Ethan (captain), Sean, Ria.
